Canada Self-Employed Immigration

The government of Canada, as well as the government of the province of Quebec, provide immigration programs for individuals who are self-employed in certain industries. To meet all requirements for migration to Canada under the Self-Employed Persons Program, a candidate must show that the individual will continue these cultural or athletic activities that will enable the candidate to be effectively independently employed in Canada and to make a huge commitment to his or her field.

Eligibility

To immigrate as a self-employed person, you must:

  • have relevant experience
  • meet the program’s selection criteria
  • be willing and able to be self-employed in Canada
  • meet medical, security and other conditions

Relevant experience

Relevant experience for a self employed person means at least two years of experience.

It must be during the period starting 5 years before the day you apply and ending on the day we make a decision on your application.
You can get more points if you have 3, 4, or 5 years of experience.

At a minimum, your experience must be:

  1. Two one-year periods being self-employed in cultural activities/ athletics, or
  2. Two one-year periods participating at a world-class level in cultural activities/ athletics, or
  3. A combination of a one-year period described in (1), and a one-year period described in (2)
